Object Information:

Also known as the Swan Nebula, Checkmark Nebula, and the Horseshoe Nebula
Discovered by Philippe Loys de Cheseaux in 1745 and catalogued by Charles Messier in 1764.
The Omega Nebula lies 5,000 - 6,000 light-years from Earth. It is 15 light-years in diameter. The total mass of the Omega Nebula is an estimated 800 solar masses. Catalogued as an H II region.
The cloud of interstellar matter of which this nebula is a part of is roughly 40 light-years in diameter, with a total mass estimate of 30,000 solar masses.
